Autism, as a condition was first recognised by Leo Kanner in the 1940s. As a result of this work autism is now thought to affect as many as 45,000 people in Scotland.
Great strides forward have taken place since Kanner’s work was published and we now understand the nature of autism and aspergers better than at any time in the past.
Autism affects the way that people communicate, relate to one another and understand the everyday world. People with aspergers syndrome show the same characteristics but exhibit average or above average levels of intelligence and often have better developed communication skills.
What we offer
Counselling and Advice
Autism and aspergers are lifelong conditions and often have a profound effect on the lives of not only those on the ‘spectrum’ but also their families.
Hopesprings offers a counselling and advice service designed to support those struggling to cope with the effects of living with or caring for someone with autism or aspergers.
The Hopespring ASD Carers Support Group
We operate a support group for carers and parents of people with autism and aspergers. Membership of the Hopesprings Support Group entitles you to attend (free of charge) our regular meetings where you will have a chance to network with other group members and engage in discussions and workshops on ASD. In addition to this you will have access to our team of experts for informal advice on matters of concern relating to ASD and you will be added to our mailing list, we will keep you up to date with current trends and developments.
We also run periodic workshops and presentations with invited, nationally recognised experts and practitioners in the field of autism and aspergers. Members of the support group will be entitled to prioritised access to these events at discounted prices.
